Vastu Shastra is a traditional Hindu system of architecture that concentrates on the ‘science of dwelling’ to create an auspicious buildings for inhabitants. Designers follow the principles of Vastu Shastra to establish harmony of a dwelling with reference to nature and the universe as a whole. The idea is to eliminate all possible obstructions to enhance the continuous flow of natural energies.

Blue, which is a tranquil color, evokes a peaceful and calm environment, thus used best in spaces for relaxation like bedrooms and meditation room. Use lighter shades as darker shades make one melancholic.

Use in rooms devoid of direct sunlight. Yellow is good for office and study rooms as it increases brain function. Yellow provides clarity, thus auspicious for ‘pooja’ rooms.

COLOR SELECTION BASED ON RASHI:

As per Vastu Shastra, the following rashis (zodiac signs) should follow these guidelines:

Aries : Coral red Libra : Cement color, milky white
Taurus : Milky white Scorpio : Pink, coral red
Gemini : Green Sagittarius : Golden yellow
Cancer : Rose red, pearl white Capricorn : Dim red
Leo : Ruby red, dim white Aquarius : Pink, blue
Virgo : Emerald green Pisces : Yellow, pure white

 

COLOR SELECTION BASED ON DIRECTION:

 

The Vastu principles state that each direction is associated with a planet; therefore the color selection should also be based on the direction the room faces, aligned with the color of the planet governing the same direction.

COLORS FOR DIFFERENT SPACES:

A living room should be placed in the north-west corner. The advised color is white; however, modifications are being seen with the use of beige, tan, blue, or green.

According to Vastu, a cook must always face east and the tap must be in the north-east. The fire angle (south-east) is the best, and the source of air (south-east) is the second best place for a kitchen. Silver and white are the best hues. However, soft tones of yellow, orange or rose can also be used.

Vastu recommends placing the dining table in the south-east because of the abundance of sunlight. Orange with secondary colors such as pink, green, and blue can also be used.

Bathrooms should either be in the west or the south and painted in corresponding light colors like blue and pink.
